Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi or Eid-e-Milad marks the birth of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. In India, Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi 2022 will begin on the evening of October 8 and end on the evening of October 9.

The festival also known as Nabi Day, Mawlid, Muhammad’s Birthday, or the Prophet’s Birthday, is an important day for Muslims all across India. The day is a reminder of the Holy Prophet’s kindness, compassion and his teachings.

The Sunni Muslim community celebrates the day on the 12th of the Islamic month of Rabi-ul-Awwal, whereas, the Shia community celebrates it on the 17th of Rabi-ul-Awwal.

Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi: Significance

The day is a means for Muslims to honour, respect, pay tribute and shower their love towards the last prophet of Islam. Different people observe the day in different ways.

On this day, streets, mosques, shrines and residential areas are lit with colourful lights. People carry green flags in their hands and tie ribbons on their wrists to celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s teachings, as the green colour represents Islam and paradise.

The prophet’s devotees celebrate by wearing new clothes, visiting each other, distributing sweets, visiting the mosque and offering special prayers. Some even observe a fast on this day.
