Delhi becomes 2nd worst-hit state as COVID tally touches 4,32,189

According to covid19india.org, as of 9 pm, the confirmed coronavirus cases in India on Monday (June 22) touched 4,32,189 on Monday as the death toll rose to 13,808. The active cases in the country climbed up to 1,77,190 while 2,41,140 patients recovered from the highly-contagious infection.

Goa reported its first COVID-19 fatality on Monday as the countrywide death toll from the disease jumped by a record 445 while Delhi surpassed Tamil Nadu to become the second worst-hit state though authorities said the situation in the national capital was getting stabilised gradually.

As the coronavirus cases surged by over 10,000 for the 11th day in a row and rose by 14,821 to take the total to 425,282 as of 8 am, the Centre maintained that the number of infections per lakh population was among the lowest in the world.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, the country’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 13,699 with the 445 new fatalities.

In its update, the ministry said the total number of recoveries stood at 2,37,195 to clock a recovery rate of 55.77 per cent. Presently, there are 1,74,387 active cases and all are under medical supervision, it said.

“The difference between the recovered patients and the active COVID-19 cases continues to widen. The number of recovered patients has crossed the number of active patients by 62,808,” it added.

From the states

An 85-year-old man succumbed to coronavirus in Goa on Monday, making it the first death due to the disease in the state, said Health Minister Vishwajit Rane. Goa has reported 818 infections out of which 683 are active cases. The first three cases were reported in a single day on March 25.

With over 59,000 COVID-19 cases, Delhi has now surpassed Tamil Nadu to become the second worst affected state after Maharashtra.Even by death count till Sunday, which stood at 2,175, Delhi is in the second spot among the list of worst-hit states.

Delhi recorded 3,000 fresh coronavirus cases on Sunday, taking the tally in the city to 59,746, authorities said.

According to the central data, the tally for Tamil Nadu stood at 59,377, the third-highest in the country, just after Delhi while the number of fatalities was 757.

Maharashtra is the worst-hit state with a total of 1,32,075 cases and 6,170 deaths, according to the ministry data.

West Bengal

Fourteen people died of coronavirus in West Bengal on Monday taking the death toll to 569, while 413 fresh cases raised the infection tally to 14,358, a health department bulletin said.

Twelve out of the 14 deaths were due to comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental, it said.

The active cases in the state stand at 5,102. At least 390 people have been discharged from different hospitals in West Bengal, improving the discharge rate in the state to 60.50 per cent.

Since Sunday evening, 9,363 samples have been tested in the state, taking the total number of such tests to 4,10,854, the bulletin added.

Maharashtra

With addition of 3,721 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, Maharashtras total count has risen to 1,35,796, a Health official said.

With 62 more people succumbing to the infection, the number of fatalities has gone up to 6,283, he said.

A total of 1,962 patients were discharged in the day, taking the number of the recovered cases to 67,706, the official said.

The number of active cases under treatment now stands at 61,793 in the state.

Maharashtra COVID-19 figures are as follows: positive cases 1,35,796, new cases 3,721, deaths 6,283, persons discharged 67,706, active cases 61,793, people tested so far 7,87,419.

Gujarat

Gujarat reported 563 new coronavirus cases on Monday, taking the tally to 27,880, while 21 more patients succumbed to the infection, 16 of them in Ahmedabad, the state health department said.

The death toll in the state rose to 1,685 with the addition of 21 more COVID-19 fatalities, it said.

With 560 patients getting discharged, the number of recovered cases in the state rose to 19,917, the department said.

The state now has 6,278 active cases with 67 patients in critical condition and on ventilator, it said.

So far, 3,29,343 samples have been tested for coronavirus in the state.

Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 27,880, new cases 563, deaths 1,685, discharged 19,917, active cases 6,278, people tested so far 3,29,343.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami has tested negative for coronavirus, Health Minister C Vijayabaskar said here on Monday.

As many as 2,710 people tested positive for the virus today, which is the single day highest increase, taking the tally to 62,087. Thirty seven patients died pushing the toll to 794 in the state, a health department bulletin said.

The Chief Minister underwent the test in the backdrop of an official in the CM’s office and another in his entourage reportedly testing positive for the pathogen.

Of the new cases, 1,487 were from Chennai and the remainder was scattered in districts and state capitals infection count reached 42,752.

As regards testing of samples, 26,592 were tested today and 9.19 lakh is the total count. Following treatment, 1,358 patients were discharged from various hospitals and 34,112 people have recovered so far and there are 27,178 active cases.

Punjab

Death toll due to the coronavirus crossed the 100-mark in Punjab after two more persons succumbed to the infection on Monday, while 177 fresh cases took the COVID-19 tally to 4,235, according to a government health bulletin.

The two fatalities were reported in Ludhiana, taking the death toll to 101.

Punjab has been witnessing a steady spike in coronavirus cases with 1,111 people testing positive for the virus since June 15.

So far, 2,825 people have been cured of the infection. There are 1,309 active cases in the state, according to the bulletin.

Five patients are critical and on ventilator support while 21 are on oxygen support, the bulletin said.

A total of 2,46,760 samples have been taken so far for testing.

Kerala

Kerala reported its highest ever single day spike of 138 COVID-19 cases on Monday, taking the total number of infections in the state to 3,308. This is the fourth straight day of over 100 infections being reported, after 118 on June 19, 127 on June 20 and 133 on Sunday.

With increasing number of cases, the government also declared four more regions in the state as hot spots, taking the total number to 112.

State Health Minister K K Shailaja said 138 COVID-19 cases were reported in Kerala, of whom 87 came from abroad, 47 arrived from other states and four contracted the disease from their contacts.

The minister, in a medical bulletin, also said that 88 people were cured of coronavirus.

Till now, 1,747 persons were cured of COVID-19 and currently 1,540 are under treatment, the bulletin said.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister V S Sunil Kumar Monday went into quarantine after a health worker who had interacted with him at a meeting at Thrissur tested positive recently.

Karnataka

Karnataka reported 249 new COVID-19 cases and five related fatalities, taking the total number of infections in the state to 9,399 and the death toll to 142, the health department said on Monday.

The day also saw 111 patients getting discharged after recovery. As of June 22 evening, cumulatively 9,399 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 142 deaths and 5,730 discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

It said that out of the 3,523 active cases, 3,443 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 80 are in Intensive Care Units. Among the five dead were three from Bengaluru urban and one each from Ramanagara and Ballari.

A total of 5,15,969 samples were tested so far, out of which 9,204 were tested on Monday alone, the bulletin said.

So far 4,93,921 samples have been reported as negative, and out of them 8,576 reported negative on Monday.

Andhra Pradesh

COVID-19 cases shot past the 9,000 mark to 9,372 in Andhra Pradesh on Monday as 443 were added afresh in the last 24 hours. The coronavirus toll mounted to 111 with five new fatalities, the latest bulletin said.

With 83 patients discharged in the last 24 hours, the total recoveries now stood at 4,435, leaving 4,826 active cases in the state, the latest COVID-19 bulletin said.

The number of COVID-19 cases rose by 1,000 in a span of just two days as the state reported 8,000 cases on June 20.

Of the 443 new cases reported on Monday, 392 were locals, 44 from other states and seven foreign returnees. Those who came from Maharashtra had the most number of 793 infections and, among the foreign returnees, those from Kuwait topped the chart with 299.
