14 killed, 50 injured as tent falls during programme in Rajasthan’s Barmer

At least 14 people were killed and about 50 injured after a tent fell on them due to strong winds during a religious programme in Barmer district of Rajasthan, police said. A ‘Ram Katha’ was organised at a school ground near Rani Bhatiyani temple in Jasol area of the district when the tent was uprooted by strong winds trapping the people sitting under it, Additional Superintendent of Police, Khinv Singh, said. Around 14 persons have died in the incident, he added. Hundreds of people were attending the event. He said that the injured were rushed to different hospitals.

Insolvency proceedings initiated against Jet Airways

Insolvency proceedings have been initiated against debt-ridden Jet Airways, which formally stopped flying on April 17 and saw lenders voting for bankruptcy earlier this month. The cash-strapped company became the first domestic airline to go into bankruptcy after the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted an insolvency petition filed by SBI on behalf of 26 lenders on June 20.

Encephalitis: Senior doctor sacked for negligence on duty in Muzaffarpur

A senior paediatrician of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, where over hundred children had died due Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), has been suspended for negligence on duty. Dr Bhim Sen Kumar, who was deputed to review the treatment process at the SKMCH, received the letter of suspension signed by additional secretary of health Vivekananda Thakur. Meanwhile, with the onset of rains, no fresh AES case has been reported in Muzaffarpur district on Sunday.

Kohli fined for excessive appealing during clash against Afghanistan

India skipper Virat Kohli has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee for appealing in an aggressive manner during their tense World Cup win over Afghanistan, here on Saturday (June 22). “Kohli was found to have breached Article 2.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Excessive appealing during an International Match”, an ICC release said. Saturday’s incident occurred in the 29th over of the Afghanistan innings, when Kohli advanced towards umpire Aleem Dar after pacer Jasprit Bumrah struck Rahmat Shah on his pads and appealed for an lbw decision.

Zimbabwe cricket board, managing director suspended

The Zimbabwe Cricket Board was suspended, on Friday (June 21), with immediate effect by the Sports and Recreation Commission, the governing organistaion for Zimbabwe’s recognised sporting organistaions. Givemore Makoni, the board’s acting MD was also suspended. The move followed as a result of ZC ignoring the directive from the SRC, asking it to suspend its electoral process after alleged complaints about the nomination process violating the constitution of the board. Nevertheless, the elections went ahead and Makoni was re-elected for a second term, prompting the SRC to come down hard.

Huawei asks India to take ‘informed and independent decision’ on 5G trials

Huawei has urged India to make an ‘informed and independent decision’ on permitting its 5G trials in the country as the Chinese telecom giant reeled under pressure following the US ban. The US has banned Huawei, the world’s leader in telecom equipment and the number two smartphone producer, over concerns of security. Washington has been pressuring other countries to restrict the operations of the Chinese telecom firm. India, however, is yet to take a call on whether it intends to place curbs on Huawei or allow the Chinese telecom equipment maker to participate in the upcoming 5G trials that are scheduled to commence in 100 days.

Nadigar Sangam elections held; Rajinikanth excuses himself

Election of the South Indian Artists Association, popularly known as Nadigar Sangam, was held on Sunday (June 23). While actor Kamal Haasan, Surya and Vijay cast their vote, Rajinikanth who is in Mumbai for a shooting, regretted not being able to cast his vote. Over 1,200 actors had voted till 2pm, according to sources, while reports said that some actors complained about not being allowed to vote. The elections were held after the Madras High Court lifted a stay on the polls on a complaint by 61 members of the association who said their voting powers were removed.
