K’taka JDS chief Vishwanath resigns over party’s ‘dismal’ show in polls

Karnataka JDS chief H Vishwanath resigned from his post on Tuesday (June 4), accepting “moral” responsibility for the party’s dismal show in the recent Lok Sabha polls. Vishwanath, an MLA, told reporters here, “I take moral responsibility for the (party’s) defeat.” The JDS chief was reportedly unhappy over being sidelined and not being taken into confidence by the party on key issues.

‘Czar of Indian cuisine’ Jiggs Kalra dies at 72

Jaspal Inder Singh Kalra, 72, popular food columnist and restaurateur, passed away after a prolonged illness on Tuesday (June 4), in Mumbai. He is popularly known as Jiggs Kalra. Having spent nearly 50 years dedicating his life to Indian food, he was referred to as the “czar of Indian cuisine”. Jiggs Kalra’s son, Zorawar Kalra, shared a picture of his father and a health update on Instagram for his 72nd birthday on May 21.

After poor showing in polls, CPI set for leadership change

Sudhakar Reddy has resigned as the secretary general of the Communist Party of India (CPI), taking moral responsibility for the 2019 rout of the party. An emergency meeting of the CPI national congress session has been called in the third week of August in New Delhi to discuss the electoral showing of the party. The party is on the verge of losing its status as national party, which is given by the Election Commission. CPI insiders say D Raja of Tamil Nadu and Atul Kumar Anjan of Bihar are in the race to succeed Sudhakar Reddy. The CPI has two members in the Lok Sabha. And they are from Tamil Nadu where it was part of a DMK-led alliance.

After SP-BSP severe ties, Akhilesh says party will go solo to bypolls in 11 seats

After hinting to partymen that she is breaking away from the SP and the BSP will contest upcoming Assembly bypolls on its own, BSP chief Mayawati told media on Tuesday (June 4) that the SP vote did not transfer to the BSP. “Dates for Assembly bypolls may be announced anytime and we are contesting individually because it will take time for the SP to convince their voters. But, in future, we can join if they are successful.” Reacting to Mayawati’s statement, SP president Akhilesh Yadav said that his party will prepare for the elections and contest alone from the 11 seats. “If the coalition has broken, I will deeply think on it,” he said.

Amit Shah rebukes Giriraj Singh for snide remarks on Iftaar parties

BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday (June 4) rebuked Union minister Giriraj Singh for his snide tweet targeting NDA leaders in Bihar on their presence in ‘Iftar’ parties and asked him to refrain from making such remarks, party sources said. Singh had posted pictures of top Bihar NDA leaders, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, attending ‘Iftar’ and questioned as to why people lag behind in observance of their own ‘karm-dharm’ (religious customs) while staying ahead in making a show for religious rituals of others.

US President Donald Trump said he wanted a “very, very substantial trade deal” between the US and the UK after Brexit, during a meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May in London on Tuesday (June 4), even as protesters chanted anti-Trump slogans nearby. Trump addressed a breakfast meeting with business chiefs alongside May at the start of the second day of his three-day state visit to the UK during which he asked the outgoing British Prime Minister to “stick around” and see a new trade deal through.

Dale Steyn out of World Cup 2019 due to shoulder injury

South African pace bowler Dale Steyn departs from the ICC World Cup after failing to recover from a shoulder injury. The fifth highest ODI wicket-taker of all time missed the first two matches and also withdrew from the Indian Premier League with the same issue. Steyn underwent a surgery for this problem in 2016 and has been facing issues with his shoulder before and ever since. This recurring problem makes his cricketing future quiet foggy.
