India will be ready to commence the Sikh pilgrimage through Kartarpur corridor to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur by the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the government said on Sunday after talks with Pakistan. Joint secretary (internal security), Home Ministry, SCL Das, who was part of the talks from the Indian side, said India has asked Pakistan to allow smooth access to 5,000 devotees every day to the shrine.

Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns from Punjab cabinet after feud with CM

Soon after he was stripped of key portfolios in the Punjab cabinet, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has resigned as a minister from the Punjab cabinet. Sidhu who was given the portfolio of the Power and Non-Renewable Energy Sources department during the cabinet reshuffle last month had failed to take charge of the new ministry. He on Sunday posted a copy of resignation letter dated July 10 and addressed to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, on Twitter.

Army man among 2 dead in Himachal building collapse

An Army jawan was among two people killed in a four-storey building collapse in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district on Sunday. As many as 37 people were trapped under the debris of the building located on Nahan-Kumarhatti road, according to officials. The trapped people, including some Army personnel and their family members, were on their way to Uttarakhand and had stopped for lunch at a restaurant within the building when it collapsed amidst heavy rains.

Cop guarding NC leader killed in militant attack in Kashmir

A police constable guarding former judge and National Conference leader Syed Tauqeer was killed in a militant attack in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday (July 14). “In a terror incident at Hiller area of Anantnag district, terrorists fired upon a policeman on duty identified as Riyaz Ahmad, causing grievous injuries to him,” a police spokesman said. The injured constable was rushed to hospital, but he succumbed to injuries, police said. The police have registered a case and started investigation into the incident.

A day after rebel Karnataka Congress MLA MTB Nagaraj hinted at taking back his resignation, more MLAs appeared to be following suit. Bill proposes scrapping NEET-PG; MBBS final exam enough for PG

In a relief to medical students wanting to pursue post-graduate courses, the Union Health Ministry has proposed to do away with NEET-PG and instead the final MBBS examination would be enough for admission to MD and MS programmes. The amendment has been incorporated in the revised draft National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill which would be sent to the Cabinet soon, official sources said. According to them, the changes have been incorporated in the bill on the directions of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Major 7.3 quake hits off eastern Indonesia, no tsunami warning issued

A major 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit off the remote Maluku islands in eastern Indonesia on Sunday (July 14), sending panicked residents running into the streets but no tsunami warning was issued. The quake struck about 165 km south-southwest of the town of Ternate in North Maluku province at 6:28 pm local time, at a depth of 10 km, according to the US Geological Survey. “The earthquake was quite strong, sending residents to flee outside. They are panic-stricken and many are now waiting on the roadside,” said Mansur, a local disaster mitigation official.

20-year-old student drowns while shooting TikTok video in Karnataka

A 20-year-old government college student drowned after she slipped and fell into a farm pond while shooting a TikTok video in Karnataka’s Kolar district on Friday (June 12). The deceased, Mala, was shooting the video alone and there was no one around to rescue her, said a report by The Indian Express quoting the police. The incident occurred in Vadagere taluk. A case has been registered in this regard and investigation is underway.

NIA arrests two in Tamil Nadu in terror gang case

After carrying out searches on the premises of three people in Tamil Nadu, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday (July 14) morning arrested two persons in Nagapattinam for their alleged links to the ‘Ansarulla’ terror gang. On Saturday (July 13) morning, based on the first information report (FIR) filed by the NIA, Delhi, the agency sleuths raided the premises of three men — Syed Bukhari, a resident of Chennai, Hassan Ali Yunusmaricar and Mohammed Yusuffudeen Harish Mohamed of Nagapattinam.
