The Congress has claimed that the police detained some migrant workers after party leader Rahul Gandhi interacted with them in New Delhi on Saturday (May 16). However, reports suggest police sources have denied detaining any such migrant labourers.

Gandhi interacted with a group of the migrant labourers near the Sukhdev Vihar flyover and asked them about their problems when they were walking towards home amid the COVID-19 lockdown. Dressed in black pants and a white kurta, he was seen sitting on the footpath and asking migrant labourers near the Sukhdev Vihar flyover about their ordeal.

“Rahul Gandhi came and met us half an hour back. He booked the vehicle for us and said he will drop us to our homes. He gave us food, water and mask,” new agency ANI quoted Devendra, a migrant labourer, as saying. Another labourer, Monu, said he was coming from Haryana and was en route to Jhansi.

Meanwhile, the Congress claimed that the police detained the labourers later in preventive custody saying they have “direction from top to do so.” However, according to ANI, police sources said that it is misinformation that the migrants who met with Rahul Gandhi were detained by police.
