Beloved by all, Delhi pays tributes to its architect Sheila Dikshit

Three-time chief minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit passed away due to cardiac arrest on Saturday (July 20) at the age of 81. Dikshit was admitted to the Escorts hospital in New Delhi on Friday (July 19).

After the news, condolences poured in from all corners cutting across party lines. President Ram Nath Kovind remembered her work for Delhi as “a period of momentous transformation for the capital”.

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu said she was a good administrator.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said she had made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi’s development.

A devastated Rahul Gandhi called her “beloved daughter of the Congress party”, saying he shared a close personal bond with her.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed shock at her passing away. “In her death, the country has lost a dedicated Congress leader of the masses,” he told reporters.

Defence Minister Rajnath Sigh said the tall Congress leader was respected across party lines.

One of her political foes, Sushma Swaraj, who was the chief minister of Delhi before Dikshit, remembered her as a “fine human being”.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “Sheilaji will be remembered for her years of exemplary governance and immense contribution to the development of Delhi.”

BJP leader Kiran Bedi said Sheila Dikshit was ‘a woman of culture’.
