Academy and Grammy award winning music composer AR Rahman’s mother has died. The maestro shared a photograph of his mother on Twitter and Instagram on Monday (December 28).
Some media outlets reported that Kareema Begum was not keeping well for some time and died in Chennai on Monday (December 28). Rahman did not share any text with his post.
Condolences poured in as soon as the music maestro shared the photo. Director Mohan Raja wrote, “Our deepest condolences sir May her Soul Rest In Peace (sic).”
Singer Harshdeep Kaur wrote, “Dear Sir.. deeply saddened by your loss.. may god give you strength. Remembering Amma’s wonderful and gentle soul. She will forever remain in our hearts.”
Shekhar Kapoor paid his condolences, “Our heart is broken, I know. But your mother left you with an inner strength, an inner resilience and belief… that I have seen and admired for long. Stay strong, my friend.”

Actor Khushbu Sundar wrote, “Losing a mother is irreplaceable. The vacuum remains forever. My deepest condolences to @arrahman and his family. May Allah give you the strength to hear the pain. #RIP #Amma.”
AR Rahman was very attached to his mother. In an interview once, he had said that his mother is musically inclined and that she is much higher than him in the spiritual context. “In fact, my mother was the one who encouraged me to take up music,” Rehman had said.
Rahman, who was born Dileep, was raised by his mother (Kasthuri Sekhar) after his father and music composer RO Sekhar died when Rahman was only nine years old.
