The Delhi police on Sunday (December 13) detained Raghav Chadha, Atishi and several other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs and leaders ahead of a planned protest outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal’s residences, against alleged misappropriation of funds by the BJP-ruled municipal corporations in Delhi.

Besides Chadha, three others legislators — Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha, Kirari MLA Rituraj Jha and Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar — were detained, according to the police. A total of 10 party leaders were detained, a senior police officer said.

“They have been detained and taken to the Rajender Nagar Police Station. They had earlier sought permission for a protest, which was rejected by police in view of DDMA guidelines (on COVID-19),” the official said.

The AAP has alleged misappropriation of over ₹2,400 crore in North Delhi and South Delhi municipal corporations, and had announced to stage protests outside Shah and LG Baijal’s houses from Sunday till a CBI probe is ordered. The allegation has been refuted by the BJP.

Earlier in the day, police had denied permission for the protest in view of the COVID-19 restrictions imposed in the state.

Chadha said they were going to protest against the “biggest scam” by the BJP-led local bodies. “But we were arrested from our residences. Does Amit Shah want to bury this corruption using the Delhi Police,” said the Rajender Nagar MLA.

Meanwhile, Atishi and some party councillors went to the Lieutenant Governor’s residence but were stopped by police barricades. They were detained after they started chanting for a CBI investigation into the case. “Instead of meeting us, the LG got Delhi Police to detain us. Who is the LG protecting? Why does he not want to order a CBI enquiry?” asked Atishi.

Atishi was released later.
