American fast-food restaurant chain KFC is set to create the world’s first laboratory-produced chicken nuggets with the innovative 3D bioprinting technology. The company has partnered with the 3D Bioprinting Solutions research laboratory based in Russia due to the annual increase in demand for alternatives to traditional meat.

In a press release, KFC said the meat produced using the technology would be as close as possible in both taste and appearance to the original product and environment-friendly when compared to the production of the ordinary meat. “Receiving a final product for testing is already planned for the fall of 2020 in Moscow,” it added in the release.

While 3D Bioprinting Solutions will be developing additive bioprinting technology using chicken cells and plant material almost without involving animals in the process, KFC will provide its partner with all necessary ingredients, such as breading and spices, to achieve the signature KFC taste, the release said.

Biomeat will contain the microelements as the original product, but will exclude additives that are being used in the traditional farming and animal husbandry. Also, 3D bioprinting technology does not cause any harm to animals, claimed KFC.
