Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind had on April 6 filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking directions for the government and media not to “demonise entire Muslim community over spread of Covid-19 due to Nizamuddin Markaz congregation of Tablighi Jamat”.

In the past 24 hours, 23 new cases of COVID-19 cases were reported in Delhi with the total number of cases (in Delhi) climbing to 120 on Tuesday (April 1).

Of these 120, 24 were people who took part in a religious congregation at Nizamuddin West area earlier this month, the Delhi Health Department said.

In a measure to combat the spread of the virus, all the 2,100 people have been evacuated from the building where they congregated. The police have registered a case against the mosque administration.

The Tablighi Jamaat is an Islamic missionary movement set up in 1926 and has members across the world.

Here are the key developments:

  1. Over 2,000 delegates, including from Indonesia and Malaysia, attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation from March 1-15, officials had said, as the South Delhi neighbourhood was virtually sealed.
  2. Home Ministry has asked the states to track down Tablighi members who travelled to various parts of the country after the two-day gathering on March 8-10.
  3. So far, 50 have tested positive in Tamil Nadu, 24 in Delhi, 21 in Telangana, 21 in Andhra Pradesh, 10 in Andamans and one each in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir after attending the mosque event. 824 foreigners had also travelled to different states and their details had been shared with the police chiefs.
  4. According to Naval Kishore Ram, Pune District Collector, the total number of people from Pune who attended event is more than 130. Many of them were either not in Pune now or remained untraceable.
  5. Ignoring all social distancing rules to avoid the deadly COVID-19, hundreds had been staying in the 100-year-old mosque complex, which has a six-floor dormitory, since March 8. On March 21, there were 1,746 in the centre and 216 were foreigners, NDTV quoted the home ministry as saying.
  6. 2,361 people were brought out from the place, out of which 617, who had symptoms, have been taken to hospitals. Others have been quarantined. “I thank all those who participated in this 36-hour operation and risked their lives,” Delhi Deputy Chief Minster Manish Sisodia said.
  7. Nizamuddin Markaz and the area around it were sanitised by South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
  8. An FIR has been registered against seven people in relation with the Nizamuddin incident.
  9. Six people have died in Telangana. A man who died in Srinagar had visited the Deoband seminary in UP. Ten more, who returned to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, have tested positive. 1,800 are quarantined in Andamans. More than 100 people from Kashmir attended the gathering and Andhra Pradesh is trying to trace 700 members.
  10. In a statement, the Markaz Nizamuddin said the event was cancelled when the Prime Minister announced the ‘Janata Curfew’ for March 22. But, members could not leave because trains were suddenly stopped.
