World Music Day: A day to revel in the seven notes

For all the music lovers out there, wish you a very happy World Music Day! Every year, the World Music Day, also known as Fete de la Musique, is celebrated on June 21.

On this day, people worldwide, celebrate the art of music. Music enthusiasts jam in public spaces like parks, metro stations and on busy roads. Many singers and musicians also participate in the celebrations by arranging free concerts for their fans.

History

The first-ever World Music Day was organised in 1982 in Paris by Jack Lang, the minister of culture of France, by Maurice Fleuret, when Lang discovered through a study that almost 5 million people in France played a musical instrument.

Lang’s dream to get people out on the streets and celebrate the essence of music together, has enabled music lovers to celebrate day for decades now. The day is now celebrated in more than 120 countries across the world including India, Germany, Greece, Russia and Italy.

Significance

The main idea is to motivate more people to make music. Amateurs are encouraged to play music in the open and make full use of the art. They can organise street performances to bring out their hidden talent of music-making.

Free concerts are also arranged for the public to introduce new genres to the masses.

Reach

Today, more than 120 countries across the world, participate in Fete de la musique (World Music Day). In the US alone, 82 cities celebrate the day.

Thousands of free concerts are arranged throughout the day, and the streets are filled with music notes of different intensities.
