CM Kumaraswamy meets MLAs as JD(S)-Congress coalition govt on the brink of collapse

The coalition government in Karnataka hangs by a thread with 12 MLAs – three from the JD(S) and nine from the Congress – submitting their resignations to the Assembly Speaker on Saturday (July 6), taking the total number of resignations to 13 including Congress MLA Anand Singh’s, earlier this week.

Even as rumours are rife that more resignations will follow, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has cut short his trip to the US and is on the way to Bengaluru on a special flight.

The Speaker, who wasn’t present in his office when the MLAs submitted their resignation, has said that he will look into the matter soon. He is expected to be back in office on Tuesday. The MLAs also met Governor Vajubhai Vala at Raj Bhawan before being flown to a Mumbai-based hotel.

It would require the resignations of 15 Congress-JD(S) coalition MLAs to enable the BJP, which has 105 MLAs in the 224-member Assembly, to gain a majority.
