Hyderabad civic polls: AIMIM has won 23 seats so far, leads TRS
After the first round of counting in the elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has maintained the lead in 42 divisions while the BJP is clearly making inroads and leading in 15 divisions.
Latest results of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections show that the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is leading Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in the divisions won so fa. The AIMIM has won 23 divisions, while the TRS has got 22. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which has made quite an impact in the elections, has won nine divisions so far. The Congress has won only two divisions.
GHMC, which covers 24 assembly and 4 Lok Sabha segments, has 150 municipal seats.
The final results are expected later in the day.
The trends so far indicate that the BJP has made key inroads in the high-stake election that is seen as a testing ground for its goal to capture power in Telangana in the 2023 assembly polls.
The saffron party had mounted an aggressive, all-out campaign focusing more on polarisation of voters than on the civic issues plaguing the city. It had roped in the party big guns including Amit Shah, Yogi Adityanath, JP Nadda, Tejasvi Surya, Prakash Javadekar and Devendra Fadnavis for the high-decibel campaign.
The TRS had swept the last GHMC elections held in 2016, bagging 99 divisions and 43.85 percent vote share while MIM had won 44 divisions with15.85 percent vote share. The BJP managed to win four wards with 10.34 percent vote share while Congress had to contend with just one ward and 10.4 percent vote share.
