Fadnavis leads pro-CAA rally in Mumbai, Azad Maidan echoes dissent

Demonstrations, both in support of and opposing the new Citizenship Act, are going on in Mumbai right now. Protesters in large numbers have gathered at the Azad Maidan of the financial capital of the country to oppose the contentious act. Meanwhile, those supporting the new legislation have gathered at August Kranti Maidan.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is leading the pro-CAA rally. Before participating in the rally, he accused the opposition of misleading Indian muslims.

Meanwhile, in old Delhi, hundreds of people gathered outside the iconic Jama Masjid on Friday to protest against the new law. The protesters, many of whom gathered after offering Friday prayers at the mosque, raised slogans against the new legislation and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“Is desh ko NRC, NPR nahi chaiye. Is desh ko rozgaar chahiye. Is desh ko aman aur shanti chahiye (This country does not need NRC, NPR, it needs jobs. The country needs peace and amity),” a protester said. The protesters, who were carrying placards that read ‘Save the Constitution, don’t divide India,” appealed to the people to remain non-violent.

Meanwhile, police held flag marches in some areas of northeast Delhi and heavy police force was deployed in parts of the city.

Earlier in the day, police stopped hundreds of people marching towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence to demand the release of Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad and to protest against the amended Citizenship Act.
