A woman has accused Babar Azam, captain of Pakistan national cricket team, of exploiting her for 10 years over false promises of marriage. The woman, who claimed to be Azam’s school friend, made the claims of sexual abuse during a press conference on Saturday.

She said that she stood by his side through his tough times and provided financial support, and that he had even proposed her for marriage in 2010. She said they’d eloped for a court wedding the next year but Azam backed out after his selection in the national squad.

The woman went on to claimed that the 26-year-old cricketer had even threatened to kill her before she approached the police and also physically assaulted her, reports said.

The claims have left the cricketing fraternity in Pakistan in a state of shock. Babar, who is currently in New Zealand for T20 and Test series against the Kiwis, is yet to respond on the allegations. He was handed over the reins of all formats earlier this month.

The Pakistani squad, including Azam, is currently in 14-day isolation ahead of the matches that are scheduled to start from December 18. At least seven team members have tested positive for COVID-19. The Pakistan team has received a final warning from the country’s health ministry after players breached protocols on their first day in isolation.
