The ban on firecrackers and restrictions due to COVID-19 have not dampened the Diwali spirit in India. The festival of lights was celebrated with as much fervour and cheer as possible.

Social media was abuzz with posts showing how the festival is being celebrated. A Guinness record 6,06,569 lamps were lit on the banks of Saryu river in Ayodhya to celebrate Diwali. 

The Gorkha community celebrated Diwali in Jammu and Kashmir with a lot of excitement. “This is our first Diwali after the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A,” said Taruna Chetri, President of All J&K Gorkha Samaj.

In Uttarakhand, devotees visited Badrinath Temple in Chamoli district, to offer prayers on the occasion of Diwali.

In West Bengal, where Kali Puja is being celebrated, devotees offered prayers at Kalighat in Kolkata.

In Patna, people thronged market places, but the usual crowds during Diwali were not there.

The Armed Forces are also celebrating Diwali in their own way. Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed sweets among jawans during his visit to Longewala, Jaisalmer.

On the occasion of Diwali, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said: “Hope this festival of lights would end gloom of pandemic, darkness of economic recession and distress.”

Karnataka’s Kalaburagi too saw people thronging the markets.

Locals in Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu used the opportunity to burst crackers to their satisfaction.
