“Give us our social history and our families back. Return Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana to us. As long as you do not give us self-government and authority, we will not even give you a drop of water.” These are the starting lines of late Sidhu Moosewala’s song SYL, the first one to be released posthumously on his YouTube channel.

The song has been written, composed, and sung by the late singer. It was released on Thursday (June 23), and so far it has garnered more than 14 million views and 1.1 million comments.

The song highlights the Satluj-Yamuna link canal issue, while also talking about Sikh prisoners and the recent farmers agitation against the controversial farm laws.
The song has some short clips of Moosewala along with black and white visuals of Punjab rivers, tube wells, and India’s map. Added to this are visuals of protesting Sikhs during the agitation against the Centre’s farm laws. There is also a mention of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

A comment from user G K said, “So much emotion in his voice reflecting the tragic history of Punjab! Rest in Power Sidhu!😎.”
Another user named Frisco Saini wrote, “RIP Legend. You’ve inspired and showcased your home and your people on a global scale. You had so much more to give this world. May your work inspire hundreds of more Sidhu’s.”
Moosewala’s death
Moosewala was shot dead by unidentified assailants on May 29. The incident took place days after his security was withdrawn by the Punjab government. He was travelling in his personal car in Jawaharke village, Mansa, when he was shot dead.
The post-mortem report revealed that the singer had 19 bullets in his body and died within 15 minutes of being shot. A Canada-based gangster claimed responsibility for the killing.
