Modi no more 'Chowkidar', others follow suit

Update: 2019-05-23 13:30 GMT

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi removed the prefix ‘Chowkidar’ from his Twitter handle on Thursday (May 23), after the party and the alliance secured a major win in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

PM Modi said he was dropping the prefix ‘Chowkidar’ from his Twitter handle. He but tweeted: ‘it remains an integral part of me.’

Following Narendra Modi, many key members of the party including BJP president Amit Shah, Smriti Irani and Sushma Swaraj removed the prefix ‘Chowkidar’ from their social media handles.

In March, Modi had urged his supporters to be part of the ‘MainBhiChowkidar’ campaign and pledge to fight corruption, after which he changed his name on Twitter to ‘Chowkidar Narendra Modi.’ Several BJP members had followed suit.
