India's COVID-19 tally crosses 25-lakh mark, 52,633 new cases reported

India’s COVID-19 tally surpassed the 25-lakh on Friday (August 14) after 52,633 people tested positive over the last 24 hours, taking the total to 25,12,245.

It can be noted that India crossed the grim milestone just a day after it crossed the 24-lakh mark. India crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7.

At least 17,96,249 people recuperated from the disease over the last 24 hours, according to covid19india.org.

The number of active cases increased to 6,66,503, while the death toll climbed to 49,005 with 861 people succumbing to the disease in 24 hours, the data updated at 9:33 pm showed.

According to ICMR, more than 2.76 crore samples have been tested, with 8,48,728 being tested on Thursday, the highest in a day.

How are states faring?

Maharashtra

With a single-day rise of 12,608 cases, Maharashtra’s COVID-19 tally rose to 5,72,734 on Friday.

The death of 364 patients during the day pushed the fatality count to 19,427.

As many as 10,484 patients were discharged on Friday following their recovery.

With this, a total of 4,01,442 COVID-19 patients have recovered in the state till now.

There are 1,51,555 active cases in Maharashtra at present, it said, adding that 30,45,085 people have been tested so far.

On the other hand, the coronavirus case tally in the slum-dominated Dharavi area here rose to 2,658 on Friday with nine new patients coming to light, a senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said. Of 2,658 cases, 2,312 patients have already recovered and there are only 87 active cases, he said.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 5,890 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the count to 3,26,245, while 117 fatalities pushed the death toll to 5,514.

As many as 5,556 people have been discharged after recovery taking the total number of recoveries to 2,67,015 till date.

The number of active cases including those in isolation was 53,716.

Chennai, which has been reporting less than 1,000 new infections over the last few days, recorded 1,187 new cases today, pushing the cumulative total to 1,14,260.

Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh reported 8,943 COVID-19 cases on Friday, pushing the overall tally to 2,73,085.

The latest bulletin said these cases were registered in the last 24 hours from 53,026 tests but 9,779 COVID-19 patients got cured and discharged from hospitals across the state.

Also, 97 fresh casualties were reported pushing the death toll to 2,475. The number of active cases stood at 89,907 after a total of 1,80,703 patients had recovered so far.

Kerala

Kerala on Friday clocked 1,569 new COVID-19 cases, the highest ever single-day spike, taking the total number of those infected by the virus in the state to 41,277.

Health Minister K K Shailaja said 27 health workers were among those who tested COVID-19 positive.

On Friday, 1,304 people recovered from the disease, taking the total number of those cured in the state to 26,996. Out of the fresh cases, 1,354 cases were locally transmitted and the sources of 86 cases are yet to be identified, the minister said in a release.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tested negative for COVID-19, hours after he went into self-quarantine as he came in the primary contact list of an official who has contracted the virus, sources in his office said.
