India reports record number of 86,432 new COVID cases; tally crosses 40-lakh mark

A record single-day spike of 86,432 cases has pushed India’s COVID-19 tally past the 40-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data on Saturday (September 5).

The total number of cases now stands at 40,23,179, which is a few cases behind Brazil, the world’s second worst-affected nation after the United States. The South American country has reported 40,91,801 infections so far.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and went past 30 lakh on August 23.

The country witnessed 1,089 deaths due to COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 69,561.

In the same period, 31,07,223 patients have recuperated from the disease and were discharged in the country, pushing the recovery rate to 77.2 per cent.

The total number of active COVID-19 cases stands at 8,46,395, the Health Ministry said.

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi account for 70 percent of the total COVID-19 deaths in the country and continue to be the states which report the highest number of COVID-19 infections, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data.
