India reports 78,479 new COVID cases, sets global record for single-day spike

India's COVID-19 tally, which crossed the 35-lakh mark on Saturday (August 29), stood at 35,39,712 as of 9 am on Sunday (August 30) with a record spike of 78,479 COVID-19 cases, according to covid19india.org.

India’s COVID-19 tally, which crossed the 35 lakh-mark on Saturday (August 29), stood at 35,39,712 as of 9 am on Sunday (August 30) with a record spike of 78,479 COVID-19 cases, according to covid19india.org.

This is the highest single-day jump in COVID-19 infections reported by any country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The US set the previous record on July 17 with 77,638 cases in a sinlge day, according to AFP.

Meanwhile, the number of recoveries surged to 27,12,520, with 64,982 people being cured of the disease and discharged.

The death toll due to the disease climbed to 63,657 with 943 people succumbing to it in a span of 24 hours, the data showed.

There are 7,62,948 active coronavirus cases in the country currently, according to the data.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and the 30-lakh mark on August 23.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 4,04,066,09 samples were tested for COVID-19 up to August 28, including 9,28,761 on Friday.

From the states

Maharashtra reported a single-day highest spike of 16,867 coronavirus cases, which pushed its case tally to 7,64,281. With 328 new fatalities, the death toll due to the pandemic reached 24,103. The earlier highest one-day increase in number of patients was 14,888 on August 26. There are 1,85,131 active cases. 11,541 patients were discharged during the day, taking total recoveries to 5,54,711.

Tamil Nadu reported over 6,000 fresh coronavirus cases, pushing the overall tally beyond 4.15 lakh as the number of deaths stood at 7,137, including 87 new fatalities. The state reported new infections in excess of 6,000 after quite some time, as it logged in excess of only 5,000 daily cases for the past many days. As many as 6,352 cases pushed the total number of infections so far in Tamil Nadu to 4,15,590. At least 6,045 people were discharged after recovery, with the total number of those cured of the dreaded virus being 3,55,727. Subsequently, there were 52,726 active cases. As many as 44,99,670 people have undergone RT-PCR tests so far, including 78,973 on Saturday.

The rapid surge of coronavirus cases continued in Andhra Pradesh as more than 10,000 were added afresh for the fourth day in a row. With 10,548 new cases added in 24 hours ending 9 am on Sunday, the state’s overall COVID-19 tally rose to 4,14,164. The bulletin said 8,976 patients got cured and discharged in the last 24 hours while 82 more succumbed to the pandemic. The overall toll rose to 3,796, while the total recoveries increased to 3,12,687. The state now has 97,681 active cases.

Karnataka reported 8,324 fresh coronavirus cases taking the tally to 3,27,076 whereas fatalities touched 5,483 with 115 fresh deaths. The total infections comprised 2,35,128 discharges including 8,110. There were 86,446 active cases in the state including 721 in the ICU.

Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 1,954 fresh COVID-19 cases, the city’s highest single-day spike here in August till date, taking the tally to over 1.71 lakh, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 4,404. This is the highest number of cases in the last nearly 50 days. Fifteen fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours. The city had recorded its previous highest spike of 1,840 fresh cases on August 27. The active cases tally on Saturday rose to 14,040 from 13,208 the previous day.
