COVID: India’s single-day recoveries at 94,612, more than daily cases
India’s single-day recoveries exceeded the number of new infections for the second consecutive day on Sunday (September 20), with 94,612 people having recuperated from COVID-19 against 92,605 new cases, according to the Union Health Ministry.
The recovery rate of the country, the highest in the world, now stands at 79.67 per cent with a total of 94,612 people having recuperated from the disease. The caseload has risen to 54,00,619.
The death toll climbed to 86,752 with the virus claiming 1,133 lives in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.
The total COVID-19 recoveries have surged to 43,03,043. The COVID-19 case fatality rate was recorded at 1.61 per cent. There are 10,10,824 active cases in the country which comprises 18.72 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.
Despite the high recovery rate, India has been logging more than 90,000 cases every day for the past week, with around 17 lakh cases and 22,283 deaths reported in September alone.
The ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament has been decided to be wound up earlier than scheduled after three MPs who had attended the session, tested positive for COVID-19, after testing negative in the mandatory tests. Besides, 17 members of Lok Sabha and eight Rajya Sabha MPs have tested positive for the virus in mandatory tests.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23 is slated to discuss the rise in cases with the chief ministers of seven worst-affected states including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, which account for almost 60 per cent of the cases in the entire country.
India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and went past 50 lakh on September 16.
According to ICMR, a cumulative total of 6,36,61,060 samples have been tested up to September 19 with 12,06,806 samples being tested on Saturday.
