COVID-19 death toll in India rises to 273; cases climb to 8,356

The number of COVID-19 cases reached 8,356 with the death toll rising to 273, the data released by Union Health Ministry on Sunday (April 12) showed. Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total number of positive cases rising to 1761, followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu 1069 and 969 cases respectively.

The number of COVID-19 cases in India reached 8,356 with the death toll rising to 273, the data released by Union Health Ministry on Sunday (April 12) showed.

The country saw more than 1000 cases and 34 deaths in the last 24 hours. As on Sunday morning, there are 7367 active cases, 716 people have been cured, discharged or migrated in India.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total number of positive cases rising to 1761, followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu 1069 and 969 cases respectively.

Punjab has registered 11 deaths while Tamil Nadu reported 10 fatalities and Telengana nine.

Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have reported six deaths each while West Bengal has registered five deaths.

Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh have reported four and five deaths respectively. Haryana and Rajasthan have recorded three deaths each.

Two deaths have been reported from Kerala. Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Assam reported one fatality each, according to the health ministry data.

The new numbers come a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicated the 21-day lockdown across the country may be extended beyond April 14.

According to an official statement about the interaction, during the video conference with CMs of all states on Saturday morning, the prime minister said there seems to be consensus amongst the states on extending the lockdown by two weeks. He underlined the motto of the government earlier was jaan hai to jahaan hai (saving lives) but now is jaan bhi jahaan bhi (saving lives as well as making the country prosperous).

The prime minister also used the opportunity to assure the state that India has adequate supplies of essential medicines. He warned against blackmarketing and hoarding.
