Barring a few peaks (5 times in the last 54 days), the number of cases detected has been lower than cases recovered for about a month and a half now.

Despite the fear of a third wave of coronavirus infection looming large, India so far has done well to bring the number of active cases below the 5-lakh mark on Tuesday (November 10), mainly due to a high recovery rate.

A total of 44,281 new Covid cases were added till the afternoon on Wednesday (November 11). For the first time in 106 days, the active cases went below the 5-lakh mark, as confirmed by the health ministry. The recovery rate further jumped to 92.79 per cent. The total case count of India stands at 8,636,011 with 1,27,615 deaths and 8,013,783 patients recovered.

By Tuesday (November 10), the country had less than 50% active cases than at the peak i.e. in September. At 4.94 lakh (as on November 10), the active cases count is at par with the count last observed by the end of July.

At its peak, in the second week of September, India had 10.17 lakh active cases, with more than 90,000 infections being detected every day. Since then things have changed for the better with active cases steadily going down over the last two months.

Barring a few peaks (5 times in the last 54 days), the number of cases detected have been lower than cases recovered for about a month and a half now. Since September 18, more than 43,000 deaths have also been recorded.

The number of active cases have been falling in most states, including Kerala, which, till a few days ago, was the largest contributor of new cases in the country. Delhi is the odd one out, besides Haryana. Delhi is facing a big surge in cases. On Tuesday, it once again reported more than 7,800 cases – the highest in the country. Delhi has recorded the most cases in the country for three days in a row.

After Maharashtra and Kerala, the national capital has the highest number of active cases.

After more than 45 days, Haryana has started to report more than 2,000 cases a day. On Tuesday, it reported more than 2,400 new cases, the most since September 18. Haryana is catching up with Delhi in the way the caseload has been steadily increasing in the last two months. The peaks in Haryana, however, are much smaller. The active cases in the state had fallen to 10,000 by the third week of October, before it began to rise again. Currently, the state has more than 16,700 active cases.

Himachal Pradesh too has a caseload of about 26,000, which is quite high considering its small population. For the last two weeks, the state has been reporting more than 300 cases a day.
