In three years from now, you may be able to zip from Dehradun to Mussoorie in 15 minutes flat — a distance that takes anything between 90 minutes to three hours depending on the traffic rush. A 5.5-km ropeway system — touted to be India’s longest — will connect the two tourist towns in Uttarakhand that are 33 km apart by road, coming as a boon to tourists and locals alike.

Who is building the ropeway?

The Rs 300-crore Dehradun Mussoorie Ropeway Project (DMRP) is being built by the Mussoorie Sky Car Company, a consortium led by FIL Industries. Phase 1 is set to be ready by September 2026.

This will be FIL Industries’ second ropeway project in India after the one in Patnitop, Jammu.

What can you expect?

  • The mono-cable ropeway will have 10-seater diamond cabins, a first in India
  • The cabins will be fully enclosed and ventilated and have glazed windows and automatic doors.
  • It will have a carrying capacity of up to 1,300 passengers per-hour-per-direction.
  • It will be an all-weather ropeway and will operate round the year.

How will it help?

The ropeway will reduce traffic congestion for both locals and tourists, especially during the peak seasons. It is being built keeping both tourism and urban mobility in mind.
