Cyclone Midhili weakens to depression; Tripura, Mizoram get no fresh rain

With cyclone Midhili weakening into a depression, Tripura and Mizoram, battered by heavy rains on Friday, got no showers on Saturday.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the cyclonic storm, after crossing the Bangladesh coast, weakened into a deep depression, later into a depression, and lay 50 km east-southeast of Tripura's capital Agartala.

The skies were clear in Mizoram while overcast conditions prevailed in Tripura. But neither state received any fresh rain since early Saturday.

Similarly, Sundarbans area in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district got light showers on Friday but none on Saturday.

Fishermen, however, did not venture into deep seas as advised by the authorities.

The depression will weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over southern Assam and adjoining Mizoram-Tripura, an IMD bulletin issued on Saturday said.

Flights unaffected

In view of the earlier prediction of heavy rains, the Tripura government declared a holiday on Saturday for all government and private schools.

Flight services remained unaffected on Saturday as no fresh rainfall was witnessed after 4 am on Saturday.

Heavy rainfall affected normal life in Tripura on Friday. Most people remained at home. Power supply was affected in some areas of Agartala.
