TMC MP smashes glass bottle after tiff with BJP leader, faces disciplinary action

In the middle of a heated exchange of words with Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Kalyan Banerjee smashed a glass bottle and threw it away, hurting himself in the process

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended for a day from the parliamentary committee on Waqf after he smashed a glass water bottle during a heated argument with the BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay.

The incident happened on Tuesday (October 22) during a meeting of the Joint Committee on Waqf Bill. In the middle of the heated exchange of words with Gangopadhyay, Banerjee smashed the glass bottle and threw it away.

In the process, Banerjee hurt his thumb and index finger and had to be given first aid. He was seen being escorted back to the meeting room by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP leader Sanjay Singh. He was also offered soup by the officials.

The committee, chaired by the BJP’s Jagdambika Pal, was listening to the views of a group of retired judges and lawyers when the Opposition members questioned what was their stake in the bill.
