NewsClick row: Delhi HC issues notice to police on arrest of Purkayastha, Chakravarty

The high court has also sought a response from the city police on the petitions seeking an interim release of the duo

The Delhi High Court has sought response from the Delhi police on the arrest of Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty.

Responding to pleas challenging the arrest of NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakravarty in a case lodged under anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Delhi High Court on Friday (October 6) issued notice to the Delhi police.

Justice Tushar Rao Gedela also sought a response from the city police on the applications seeking the interim release of Purkayastha and Chakravarty till pendency of their petition. The court listed the matter for further hearing on October 9.

Purkayastha and Chakravarty were arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on Tuesday (October 3). The police have sealed the NewsClick's office in Delhi. The portal has been accused of receiving money to spread pro-China propaganda.

The duo is currently in police custody after their arrest under the UAPA.
