Bangladesh: Crown gifted by PM Modi stolen from Kali temple
Expressing concern over the theft, the Indian embassy has urged the Bangladesh government to recover the crown and take action against the perpetrators
A crown gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh’s Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in Satkhira, has been reportedly stolen.
According to Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, the crown, made of silver and coated with gold, was stolen was around 2 pm on Thursday (October 10) soon after the temple’s priest wound up the day’s worship.
Cleaning staff which came later reported that the crown was missing from the head of the deity.
The CCTV footage from inside the temple showed a man decamping with the crown after taking it off the deity’s head.
Police are checking the CCTV footage of the temple to get to the thief.
Indian embassy expresses concern
Expressing concern over the theft, the Indian embassy in Bangladesh urged the government of the neighbouring country to recover the gift and take appropriate action against the perpetrators.
“We express concern & urge Govt of Bangladesh to investigate theft, recover the crown & take action against the perpetrators,” the Indian Embassy posted on X.

Revered shrine
The temple is revered as one of the 51 ‘Shakti peethas’ in Hindu mythology.
Prime Minister Modi had gifted the crown for Goddess Kali during his visit to Bangladesh in March 2021.
