Israel has shared CCTV footage of the wife of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, in the tunnel under their family home at Khan Younis in Gaza allegedly carrying a luxury Hermes Birkin handbag worth about Rs 26 lakh.

Sinwar, who was reportedly the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks on Israel last year, was killed in a military operation by Israeli forces in southern Gaza last week. In CCTV footage that was shared by the Israelis, Sinwar is seen moving inside a tunnel with his wife and children a few hours before the October 7 attacks on Israel that sparked a war that has continued for more than a year. The Sinwar family is seen carrying mattresses, pillow, television, and bags in the video.

“Sinwar’s wife caught in this photo sneaking to the tunnels the night before October 7th – get this – clutching a $32,000 Hermes Birkin bag! While Gazans endured hardship under Hamas, Sinwar and his family were shamelessly living in luxury, indulging while sending others to die,” said a post on the official X account of the Israel government, run by its foreign ministry. The post carried a photo of Sinwar’s wife carrying the purported Birkin bag, and an enlarged photo of a Hermes Birkin bag with its price mentioned below.

The photo of the bag in her hand is not very clear, and the design on the bag seems to be similar to the Hermes Birkin 40 Black Togo Gold Hardware edition.

The militant group Hamas has not made any comment on the video footage or on Israel’s claims.

The Israeli army spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari showed photos of the dwelling in the tunnel with a kitchen, toilets, and showers. They also found cash, food, and documents there.

Yahya Sinwar, being the brain behind the October 7 attacks on Israel, was one of the primary targets of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) during the past one year of the Israel-Hamas conflict. He managed to escape several attempts to kill him.

Hagari said the IDF identified his final hiding place after they found his “DNA sample on a tissue with which he blew his nose”.
