One of the most influential figures in the Middle East, Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an airstrike on Lebanon’s Beirut, the Israeli military claimed on Saturday (September 28).

The day before, his daughter Zainab Nasrallah was reported to have been killed in a massive Israeli airstrike on Beirut. Nasrallah was supposedly killed in the same strikes.

On Saturday, Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani declared on X: “Hassan Nasrallah is dead.” Another military spokesperson, Captain David Avraham, also confirmed to news agency AFP that the Hezbollah chief had been “eliminated” in Friday’s airstrikes.

Israel’s target for long

There has been no official confirmation from Lebanon regarding the deaths. These deaths could lead to a further escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in the already war-torn region.

Nasrallah had long been Israel’s target, which is why he avoided coming out in public for years. He was reportedly the one who played a major role in turning Hezbollah into the feared political and military force it is now.

A revered figure, Nasrallah led the Hezbollah into helping train the Hamas fighters of Palestine, as well as armed militias in Iraq and Yemen. With close personal links to Iran, he also reportedly facilitated the procurement of missiles and rockets from Iran for use against Israel.
