Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (May 27) said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal getting support from a Pakistani leader during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections calls for a "thorough investigation”.

Stating that it is a “very serious matter”, PM Modi told news agency IANS in an interview, “I don’t think I should comment on such topics from the position I am in, but I can understand your concern.”

“I am not aware why certain people are liked by those who harbour animosity towards us. Why does support emerge from there (Pakistan) for a few individuals? This is a matter that calls for thorough investigation,” he added.

Former Pakistan minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain had last week replied to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Kejriwal when he posted a picture with his family after voting.

“May peace and harmony defeat forces of hate and extremism,” Hussain said.

In reply, Kejriwal had rebuffed him and asked him to take care of his country which is “very bad right now”.

“Chaudhary Sahib, I and the people of my country are fully capable of handling our issues. Your tweet is not needed. The situation in Pakistan is very bad right now. You take care of your country,” Kejriwal posted.

Hussain said, “CM sb! Indeed electioneering is your own issue but hope you will appreciate extremism be it in Pakistan or India is a borderless phenomenon and dangerous for everyone be it BD, India or Pak so everyone with some conscience must be concerned….situation in Pak is very far for ideal but individuals must strive for better Society wherever they are… (sic).”

He had also commented on Kejriwal’s release from jail after he got interim bail from the Supreme Court in the Delhi excise policy case. “Modi G Lost another battle #Kejriwal released… good news for moderate India (sic),” he posted.

Earlier, Hussain had commented on a video of Rahul and posted, “Rahul on fire”.

On May 2, reacting to Hussain’s tweet on Rahul, Modi said that Pakistani leaders were “crying and praying” for Congress which was “dying”.

“Look at the coincidence, today Congress is getting weak in India. The funny thing is that here Congress is dying and there Pakistan is crying. Now Pakistani leaders are praying for Congress. Pakistan is eager to make the prince the Prime Minister and we already know that Congress is a fan of Pakistan. This partnership between Pakistan and Congress has now been completely exposed,” Modi said during a public rally in Gujarat’s Anand.

“The weak Congress government used to give dossiers to the masters of terror. But, Modi’s strong government kills terrorists on the ground,” he added.

Several BJP leaders including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had attacked the Congress for having “fans” in Pakistan over Hussain’s social media post for Rahul.

“Shri Rahul Gandhi has such big fans following in Pakistan! Even a senior political leaders like Fawad Hussain Chaudhry who was Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting is Rahul Gandhi's fan!” Rijiju said.
