LS polls: Sania Mirza may debut in politics as Congress candidate from Hyderabad

Sania Mirza, one of the best tennis players India has ever produced, may contest the Lok Sabha elections from Hyderabad on a Congress ticket.

According to informed sources, Sania is set to make her political debut as the Congress Central Election Committee meets in Delhi on Wednesday (March 27) to zero in on its final list of candidates.

Azharuddin’s idea?

Former Indian cricket captain and former Congress MP Mohammad Azharuddin is supposed to have suggested Sania’s name to the party as a prospective candidate for the Hyderabad seat. Azharuddin’s son Asad is married to Sania’s younger sister Anam Mirza.

More than 50 per cent voters in Hyderabad constituency are Muslim, and Congress leaders believe that if Sania, who has a star image, is brought into the election ring, victory is assured, said sources.

In the past, Sania has had an association with the BRS in Telangana as well. She was the brand ambassador for the state when K Chandrashekar Rao’s party was in power in the state. Sania has been seen with him in public several times. However, she was still a tennis player at that time. She retired from professional tennis in February 2023.

Personal life

Sania is currently busy with the Ramzaan Expo ‘Daawat-e-Ramzaan’ event. From Wednesday to April 10, before Eid, Sania and Anam, who is a YouTuber, will meet their fans as part of the event. Sania has released a video message inviting her fans to a shopping and food carnival.

Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon is scheduled to inaugurate the event on Wednesday evening. At this expo, food, clothing, and jewellery stalls are set up and visitors are treated to a variety of Ramzaan delicacies, including haleem, kebabs, biryanis, and sweets.

She married Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik in 2010 and has a son with him. The couple have split recently.
