Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at a rally in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday (May 26), targeted the Samajwadi Party (SP), saying it defamed Mirzapur and turned the entire Uttar Pradesh and Purvanchal into “safe hideout” for the mafia.

He also branded the opposition INDIA bloc as communal and casteist, and claimed they have decided to change the Constitution to give reservation to Muslims.

Addressing a poll meeting in Mirzapur in support of NDA partner Apna Dal’s candidate from the eponymous Lok Sabha seat, Anupriya Patel, and Rinki Kol of Robertsganj Lok Sabha seat, Modi claimed that while the SP and Congress are dedicated to their vote bank, Modi is dedicated to the rights of backward communities and the poor.

“Communal, casteist, dynastic”

“People of the country have identified the people of INDIA bloc. These people are staunchly communal, casteist, and dynastic (parivarwadi). Whenever their government is formed, they take decisions on that basis,” he said.

Speaking at the rally, Modi also said that he grew up washing cups and plates and serving tea as a child, and added that the relationship between Modi and tea is very deep.

He also accused the Samajwadi Party of neglecting the talent of people of the Yadav community and giving tickets to only family members of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

“No one wants to waste vote on SP”

Noting that no one hires different masons to build a good house, the prime minister claimed that the Congress and SP alliance is saying there will be five prime ministers each in five years.

“Tell me, does anyone keep five prime ministers in five years? Can the prime minister make the country strong if he is concerned about protecting his position?” he remarked, adding, “Therefore, the country decided that for a strong country the prime minister should also be strong. That is why the NDA is getting such a huge mandate. No one wants to waste their vote by giving it to the SP.”

He claimed that “no one wants to waste their vote” on Samajwadi Party. “No one will vote for someone who is drowning. The common man will vote only for the one whose government is certain to be formed,” he added.

“Even mafia was SP vote bank”

Slamming SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, the top BJP leader said there are so many promising people in the Yadav community but he (Akhilesh) gives tickets only to his family members.

“These SP people used to release even the terrorists who were caught. The SP government used to suspend any police officer who was reluctant in this. They had made the entire UP and Purvanchal havens for the mafia. Be it life or land, no one knew when it would be snatched away. In the SP government, the mafia was also seen as a vote bank,” PM Modi claimed.

He further asserted that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was carrying forward the “Swachhta Abhiyan” very bravely and the mafia is now trembling in the BJP government.

Constitution in target

Modi claimed even the Constitution was also in INDIA bloc’s “target”. “They (Opposition) want to loot the reservation of SCs-STs-OBCs. Our Constitution clearly says there cannot be reservation based on religion. But in its manifesto released during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2012, SP had said just like Dalits and backward classes, Muslims would also be given reservation,” Modi said.

He claimed that SP had even said it would change the Constitution for this. “SP had announced that 15 per cent reservation would be given to Muslims in police and PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary). How these people were bent on snatching away the rights of SC-ST-OBC to please their vote bank!” Modi claimed.

He also emphasized that he was “dedicated to the poor, Dalits, and backward people”.

In Mirzapur and Robertsganj, voting will be held in the seventh phase on June 1.
