Stalin issues a ‘final warning from Tamil Nadu’ to Modi on delimitation

Stalin warns Centre of massive state-wide agitation if Parliament pushes through a Constitutional amendment on delimitation in a special session

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin shot a direct warning at the Centre on Tuesday (April 14), saying the state would not remain silent if the BJP government proceeded with its plan to push through a delimitation amendment during a special Parliament session.

Speaking in Tamil, Stalin opened bluntly: "This video serves two purposes: To speak about the grave danger that has now reached the very doorstep of Tamil Nadu, and to issue a clear warning to the BJP-run Union government."

A session called amid elections

Stalin described the April 16-18 special session as an act of political high-handedness. "It is being forcibly convened in the midst of elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal," he said, accusing the Centre of attempting to "bulldoze through a Constitutional amendment on delimitation" without consulting any state or political party.

"Thus, ignoring everything we have said, without consulting not just the DMK but any political party or any state, they are attempting to proceed unilaterally."

South complied, now pays the price

He drew a sharp contrast between the South's record on family planning and what he called its impending punishment. "When the Union government urged us to control population growth, to have smaller families, and to follow family planning measures, we complied. Is this now the punishment for having done what was asked of us with discipline?"

'Tamil Nadu will rise' if Centre moves

Stalin promised that any move against Tamil Nadu's interests would be met with mass protest. "Tamil Nadu will rise. Tamil Nadu will register its protest with full force. Every family will take to the streets. Under my leadership as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, we will organise a massive agitation."

He also warned the Centre against using the election season as cover: "Do not assume that, since this is an election period and attention is elsewhere, you can quietly carry out delimitation in Delhi. Do not even entertain that thought."

Invoking the DMK's founding defiance, he added: "India will once again witness the spirit of the DMK of the 1950s and 1960s."

What delimitation means for the South

Delimitation is the redrawing of parliamentary constituency boundaries based on population. Southern states fear that because they followed the Centre's family planning directives and kept population growth in check, they stand to lose seats to more populous northern states in any fresh exercise.

The Congress has raised similar concerns, with Sonia Gandhi questioning the move — which, Stalin noted, also went unanswered: "There is no answer, even for the principal Opposition party, the Congress."

A final warning from Tamil Nadu

Signing off, Stalin was unambiguous. "Do not mistake this for a threat. This is a warning. Even if you choose to interpret it as a threat, it does not concern us." He addressed Modi directly: "This is the final warning issued to you from Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu will fight. Tamil Nadu will win."
