Italian tourist, wife test positive for coronavirus in India

An Italian tourist and his wife tested positive for the deadly coronavirus infection on Tuesday and the two of them have been kept in isolation at SMS hospital in Jaipur.

An Italian tourist and his wife tested positive for the deadly coronavirus infection on Tuesday (March 3) and the two of them have been kept in isolation at SMS hospital in Jaipur.

The tourist had tested negative when his samples were examined the first time. However, his health condition deteriorated and his samples were given for another round of testing, in which he tested positive.

Since the test results had varied, his samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for a final round of testing. The results came back positive.

Meanwhile, the tourist’s wife too has tested positive for the virus, and her samples are to be sent to NIV for further confirmation. “The wife of the Italian tourist also developed symptoms and samples were collected. The report indicates positive signs of the virus in her. For further confirmation, we are sending her sample to the NIV, Pune,” an official of the Rajasthan Health Department said.

The tourist’s identity is yet to be ascertained.

Two other confirmed cases were reported on Monday — one each in Delhi and Telangana. “Both the patients are stable and being closely monitored,” the health ministry said in its statement.

The person who tested positive in Delhi had travelled to Italy earlier and is being diagnosed at RML hospital, according to the ministry. The person from Telangana had travelled to Dubai earlier.

“We have conducted meetings with department officials and are taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus. The state government is alert on this issue,” said Telangana Health Minister Etela Rajender following reports of the confirmed case in his state.

These are the latest cases following the three earlier cases which were reported in Kerala.
The three persons, which include two medical students of a university at Wuhan, who had earlier tested positive for COVID-19 in Thrissur, Alappuzha and Kasaragod districts were discharged following recovery.
