Heavy to very heavy rains in Maharashtra over next 4-5 days: IMD

A low pressure area over Odisha and a cyclonic circulation spreading fast over Central India will intensity rains in all of Maharashtra over the next four to five days, says the weather department.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) report stated that Konkan, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada will be at the receiving end. These areas will get heavy rainfall over the next 4 or 5 days. “A low-pressure area over Odisha as well as a cyclonic circulation spread over 7.6 km has triggered these rains,” the IMD stated.

Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a ‘red alert’ for south Konkan, Goa and south central Maharashtra and orange alert for north central Maharashtra, east Vidarbha and west Vidarbha for the next two days. Pune, Satara and Kolhapur districts are likely to get heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

The IMD stated that the off-shore trough is spread from Gujarat coast to Karnataka coast and an east-west shear zone is causing the heavy showers.

“During this period, the respective regions will witness extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in ghat areas. For Pune, a red alert has been issued for July 7 and July 8,” PTI quoted IMD officials as saying.

Meanwhile, the water levels of Panchganga river in Kolhapur rose dangerously two days back and are close to the danger mark.

Several parts of the state have received heavy to very heavy rainfall over the last few days. As a precautionary measure, two teams of National Disaster Relief Front (NDRF) have been stationed in flood-prone regions of Kolhapur district. Taking a lesson from the floods that battered Kolhapur district in 2019 and 2021, the district administration is not taking any chances this time and is on high alert.
