Migrant workers attack cops; demand wages, permit to go home

Violence broke out on Wednesday (April 29) near IIT Hyderabad campus when hundreds of construction workers gathered near the campus, demanding their wages and permission to return to their natives.

According to a report in NDTV, the migrant workers allegedly attacked their employers and the police who had arrived at the site to request them to resume work.

It is also being said that a police officer was injured when the workers threw stones at them and vandalised their vehicles.

Migrant workers from several states including Bihar and Madhya Pradesh who were employed near the premier institution alleged that even as they were provided with shelter and food, salaries of about 2,600 workers for the past two months is due since the lockdown was announced.

The non-payment of salaries comes in the backdrop of the government instructing all employers to duly pay contract and daily wagers their salaries for the months of March and April.

Sources told NDTV that the police have been reluctant to take any action against the workers and pacified them by saying that their states would not take them back even if they get permission to leave from Telangana.

The construction company has promised to pay the pending salaries by Thursday, they added.
