With 1,927 new cases, Tamil Nadu reports highest single-day spike


Tamil Nadu reported 1,927 new COVID-19 cases today (June 10), the highest single-day spike so far, said the state health department. The state also recorded 19 new deaths of patients who succumbed to the coronavirus infection.

With the new figures, the COVID-19 tally in the state now stands at 36,841 and the death toll is at 326, according to the health department’s daily bulletin. Of the 36,841 people, 25,937 are from Chennai.

So far, as many as 326 people have died due to COVID-19 in the state, of which 260 people were from Chennai.

On Wednesday, the state tested 17,675 samples of 16,667 people.

The bulletin also stated 15 people in total died due to comorbidities.

Out of the 1,927 new cases today, Chennai reported 1,390 cases, followed by 182 cases from Chengalpattu, 105 new cases from Thiruvallur, and 33 cases from Kancheepuram, while districts such as Coimbatore, Karur, and Perambalur reported zero new cases today.

So far, a total of 19,333 patients have been discharged from various hospitals post COVID-19 treatment. On June 10, 1,008 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals across the state.

Out of the 1,927 fresh cases reported on June 10, four people who tested positive for the infection had returned from abroad, while 26 who tested positive were recent passengers who had returned to Tamil Nadu from other states in India.

Overall, out of the total positive cases reported in Tamil Nadu, state capital Chennai accounts for 25,937 cases, while Chengalpattu has reported 2,328 cases so far. Thiruvallur accounts for 1,581 cases, Tirunelveli accounts for 407 cases, and Thiruvannamalai accounts for 548 cases.
