Climax is an apology as Vijay Sethupathi cuts cake with a sword
Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi found himself in the midst of a raging controversy after a photo of the actor cutting a cake with a sword on his 43rd birthday on Saturday (March 17) went viral.
Sethupathi was celebrating his birthday with the crew of his upcoming film directed by filmmaker Ponram.
After coming under severe criticism for setting a bad example, the actor on Saturday released a statement apologizing for his conduct.
“I thank all celebrities and fans who wished me on my birthday. Three days ago, a picture taken at my office has led to a debate,” he said, adding that the sword he is seen cutting the cake with in the video is part of his upcoming movie by Ponram.
“I am currently acting in a movie directed by Pon Ram sir. The sword is an important part of the movie and hence I cut the cake with that alongside the crew members. Many of them told me that this will set a wrong precedent. Henceforth, I will be more cautious about these things. If the act has hurt anyone, I apologise for that,” he said in his tweet in Tamil.
Incidents of people cutting birthday cakes with swords and other sharp weapons surfaced after notorious gangster Choolaimedu Binny was seen celebrating his birthday by cutting a cake with a machete in 2018.
In 2018, police had arrested six people who were seen cutting a cake with a sword during a birthday party in Tiruvallur.
