Over 150-mm rain pummels Bengaluru; two killed


Torrential rain on Tuesday night (May 17) flooded Bengaluru roads throwing the traffic out of gear. An orange alert has been issued by the authorities on Wednesday, which means the city and its surrounding areas are expected to experience heavy rainfall and should be prepared. Two people have been killed in rain-related incidents.

According to multiple reports, the city received over 155 mm of rain, and in some parts of the city, it’s still raining.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, due to a cyclonic circulation over Kerala and other influences, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm and lightning are very likely over Kerala-Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Lakshadweep and Rayalaseema during next five days. Rain and thundershowers very likely to occur at most places in Bengaluru today as well.

On Tuesday, in the heavy downpour that Bengaluru witnessed, water had entered many homes in Narasimha colony in south Bengaluru and the BBMP received complaints from 15 localities including Indiranagar, Mahadevapura, Hosakerehalli, Jeevanbima Nagar and Mahadevapura. In certain areas, 10 cm of rainfall was recorded in just half and hour.

Office-goers returning from work had to make their way through roads that were full of water. Videos showed several low lying areas in knee-deep water and vehicles and people wading through it. A Mercedes SUV, with its two wheels in air, was seen stuck on a city road in one of the videos.
