Karnataka clarifies: Want only fewer flights from 5 states, no ban

The Karnataka government on Thursday clarified that it had only appealed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation to reduce air traffic from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Rajasthan to curb the spread of COVID-19, and not sought any ban.

Issuing the clarification, state minister J Madhuswamy, however, said that restrictions have been imposed for people coming by road from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat to ensure adequate quarantine facilities. Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are among the states that are worst-affected due to COVID-19.

The clarification came after it was reported that Karnataka had banned the entry of all flights, trains and other vehicles into the state to contain the spread of the virus. Earlier, the state had imposed similar restrictions on arrival of people from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Karnataka has so far registered 2,533 cases, including 47 deaths, as per the state’s latest bulletin. As many as 118 of the 135 fresh cases reported over 24 hours ending May 28 morning were reportedly those who had arrived from other states.
