Farooq Abdullah ‘stopped’ at Hazratbal; Mehbooba calls it Centre’s ‘iron fist'

The National Conference (NC) on Friday (October 30) claimed that the party president Farooq Abdullah’s residence was “blocked” by the Jammu and Kashmir administration and he was “stopped” from offering prayers at Dargah Hazratbal in Srinagar on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi.

The party tweeted that it condemns “this infringement of fundamental right to pray”. “J&K administration has blocked the residence of Party President Dr Farooq Abdullah and stopped him from offering prayers at Dargah Hazratbal. JKNC condemns this infringement of fundamental right to pray, especially on the auspicious occasion of Milad Un Nabi SAW,” the NC wrote.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Abdullah was released from house arrest in March. He was detained in August last year under the Public Safety Act (PSA) after the Centre abrogated Article 370.

Reacting to the news of Abdullah not being allowed to offer prayers, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti attacked the Union government for its “iron fist” approach towards Jammu and Kashmir.

She tweeted, “Preventing Farooq sahab from offering prayers on Milad Un Nabi SAW at Hazratbal exposes GOI’s deep paranoia & their iron fist approach towards J&K. Its a gross violation of our rights & is highly condemnable (sic).”

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to wish on Milad-un-Nabi. “Best wishes on Milad-un-Nabi. Hope this day furthers compassion and brotherhood all across. May everybody be healthy and happy. Eid Mubarak!,” he tweeted.
