Six detained for ‘Goli Maaro’ slogans at busy metro station in Delhi

Six men were detained on Saturday by the Delhi Metro Rail Police for raising incendiary slogans like, “Desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro sa***n ko (shoot down the traitors who betray the country)” at Rajiv Chowk, which is one of Delhi’s busiest metro stations.

Six men were detained on Saturday (February 29) by the Delhi Metro Rail Police for raising incendiary slogans like, “Desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro sa***n ko (shoot down the traitors who betray the country)” at Rajiv Chowk, which is one of Delhi’s busiest metro stations.

People were seen wearing white t-shirts and orange headgear, and heard chanting this slogan in a video shared widely on social media.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a statement, “In reference to a video clip going viral on social media, showing sloganeering by some passengers at Rajiv Chowk Metro station, it is to state that this incident happened today around 10:52 am at the station and DMRC/CISF staff immediately handed them over to the Delhi Metro Rail Police for further necessary action.”

The DMRC noted in the statement that any kind of demonstration that causes nuisance to the public is prohibited in Delhi metro premises. “Any passenger indulging in such an act is liable to be removed from the Metro premises,” it said.

Police are currently interrogating the six men.

This episode comes after four days of unexpected violence in northeast Delhi over the amended Citizenship Act between groups supporting and opposing the CAA. More than 40 people have died and 200 injured.

The ‘goli maaro’ slogan is the same one used in a series of hate speeches by BJP leaders. Those protesting against the amended citizenship law were portrayed as traitors by a few of these leaders.

One such leader is Union minister of state Anurag Thakur, who was filmed urging people to chant, “Desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro saa*** ko,” at a rally during the campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections.

The slogan was also chanted shortly before gunmen opened fire at anti-CAA protesters in northeast Delhi.

Abhay Verma, another MLA from Delhi and a BJP leader, was seen marching through the streets raising the same slogan, on February 25.
