Shots were reportedly fired as scores of pro and anti-Citizenship Amendment Act groups clashed with each other in northeast Delhi’s Maujpur on Tuesday (February 24).

According to Hindustan Times, the two groups pelted stones at each other and tried burning down houses and even fired shots during the clashes near the heart of the national capital. The report said rioters had a free run in the morning in the east Delhi neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a second review meeting over the situation with top officials and politicians on Tuesday.

The rioters even attempted to burn down a four-storey house from where stones were being pelted at a mob. They also burnt down motorcycle as they tried breaking into another from where a resident was trying to videograph the arson.

Reports alleged Delhi Police resorted to a hands-off approach even as the mobs went on a rampage. The Hindustan Times report said a man belonging to a pro-CAA group fired multiple shots at their rival group around 1:30 pm. Besides, others belonging to the two groups were also seen firing at their rivals, it said.

There were attempts to prevent media personnel from recording the incidents of arson. A rioter reported tore away some pages from a journalist’s notebook during the clashes, reports said.
