Seven engineering students killed in road accident in Guwahati


Seven engineering students travelling in a speeding SUV were killed on the spot, when their vehicle collided headlong with a pick-up truck at around 1 am on Monday (May 29) morning in Guwahati.

Six others have been injured in the fatal accident, which occurred near the Jalukbari flyover in Guwahati. According to the police, the speeding Scorpio SUV, which had 10 people travelling in it, lost control and crossed a road divider and crashed into a Bolero pick-up truck coming from the opposite direction.

The SUV and the pick-up truck were crushed beyond recognition giving an indication of the intensity of the crash. Out of the 10 occupants in the car, who were all third-year students of Assam Engineering College, seven died on the spot.

The three other students and three passengers of the pick-up truck, who are injured, have been admitted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, police said.

The hired SUV was driven by one of the students, Kaushik Baruah.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who visited the accident site, expressed his anguish over the loss of young lives. The CM tweeted, “Extremely anguished by the loss of young and precious lives in the road accident at Jalukbari. My deepest condolences to their parents and families. Have spoken to authorities at GMCH. All possible medical assistance is being provided to those injured.”
