CSK could manage only 103/9 in 20 overs, which is their lowest IPL total on their home ground – MA Chidambaram Stadium. The previous lowest was 109. However, the lowest-ever total for CSK in IPL is 79.

Shivam Dube was the top scorer with 31 not out off 29. CSK hit only eight fours and one six in their innings.

Narine shines

Earlier, MS Dhoni returned as CSK captain after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the rest of the season due to an elbow fracture but he could not change the team’s fortunes.

After KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and invited the hosts to bat, a similar story unfolded with their openers failing to get going in the first six overs of the powerplay.

CSK were struggling at 31 for two in six overs with both openers Devon Conway (12) and Rachin Ravindra (4) dismissed cheaply.

They never recovered from these early losses and wickets kept tumbling with KKR spinners calling the shots. Dhoni, who batted at No. 9, made just one run off four balls before being trapped LBW by Sunil Narine, who was the pick of the bowlers with 3/13 in four overs.
