While there is speculation that this year’s IPL could be Dhoni’s last, his comments after CSK’s loss to Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday night (April 20) are also seen as him continuing for the Chennai franchise in 2026.

CSK at bottom of table

Five-time champions CSK are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 table with just four points from eight games. With six matches to go in the league phase, it is an uphill task for them to make the playoffs.

After MI thrashed CSK by nine wickets at Wankhede Stadium, Dhoni said, “We need to see whether we are playing the right form of cricket”.

No many changes for next year

Dhoni hinted that players “aren’t applying themselves” but also said that he is closer to identifying the core for next year.

“With all the games that are in front of us that we are supposed to win, we just take it one game at a time and if we lose a few, what will be important for us is to get the right combination for next year,” Dhoni said.

“You don’t want too many players getting changed, what will be important is to try and qualify, but if not get a secure 11 for next year and come back strong,” Dhoni, who returned as CSK captain midway this season after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured and ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025.

“...we are successful because we play good cricket and at the same time, when we are not playing good cricket, what is important is not to get too emotional about it and at the same time, you want to be practical,” he added.
