Trust to be set up for construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya: PM

The Union Cabinet has given its nod to set up a trust for the construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Just three days ahead of the Delhi assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Wednesday (February 5), announced the formation of a trust that would oversee the construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya.

“My government has decided to set up a trust called Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Skshetra, which will take decisions independently on the construction of a Ram temple and related issues,” PM Modi said in the Lok Sabha. Amid chants of “Jai Shri Ram”, Modi also said, “Let us all support construction of grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya.”

The Prime Minister also said that the trust has been named Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Shetra. He further said that the Uttar Pradesh government has agreed to give five acres of land to the Sunni Wakf Board as directed by the Supreme Court. It has also been decided to transfer 67.703 acre land to the trust, he added.

Modi said in India, be it Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Parsis or Jains, everyone is a part of one “broad family.”

“Development must take place for every member of the family. Our government is moving forward with the mantra of ‘sabka sath sabka vikas’ so that everyone is happy,” he said.

Modi said after the verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi issue came out, people displayed remarkable faith in democratic processes and procedures. “I salute the 130 crore people of India,” he said.

Explaining the rationale behind the announcement, the Prime Minister said that the declaration was in line with the Apex Court’s directive that the trust be formed within a three month period. It is to be noted that the judgment on the Ayodhya matter was delivered last November.

Earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet gave its nod to set up a trust for the construction of a Ram Temple.

Coming as it does, on the eve of the Delhi polls, the announcement is expected to generate a controversy over a probable violation of the model code of conduct.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government, within hours of the prime Minister’s announcement allotted five acres of land in Ayodhya district to the Sunni Central Waqf Board.

The land is in village Dhannipur in tehsil Sohawal in Ayodhya on the Lucknow highway, about 18 kilometres from the district headquarters, state government spokesperson Shrikant Sharma told reporters.
